Neem: An unmatched medicament

   

A wonder tree which is useful for our skin, systems, body as well as for the environment on the whole is the neem tree, a healer for humanity.

Neem is the tree which is acclaimed not only in India but all over the world. Ayurveda signifies the qualities of neem by the quote ‘सर्वरोग हरो निम्ब’... which means the one that cures all the ailments, पिचुमर्द: पिचुं कुष्ठं मर्दयति नाशयति - कुष्ठ को नष्ट करने वाला the one which is very useful in treating leprosy and अरिष्ट: नरिष्टमशुभमस्मात् - जिस से शरीर को कोई हानि न हो the one which does not harm the body if taken in any form. Thus every part of neem i.e roots, leaves, twigs has property of curing diseases such as twig of neem tree substitute both- toothpaste & toothbrush; leaves utility is noticed in oil, soaps, lotion, face masks, shampoos, in whole grains to prevent the insects; neem flowers are an excellent source of antioxidant; seeds are applied in insecticides as well as pesticides. Its importance is also acclaimed by United Nations and Neem has been declared as the "Tree of the 21st Century". Here are some benefits of Neem.

Neem for healthy skin

In ayurveda the line of treatment is totally different i.e strictly based on tri doshas (त्रिदोष) namely vatta, pitta and kapha, saptadhatu and panchmahabhuta. Among these three doshas - bhrajaka pitta/भ्राजक पित्त (a type of pitta) is the key factor for the skin and any imbalance in this dosha leads to skin ailments. Neem is used widely for pittaj and kaphaj ailments like acne, pigmentation, allergies, ageing, skin infections such as eczema, psoriasis and many more. So here I would tell you how you can use neem according to your skin type (dosha).

If you are having:

  • dry skin then you can use neem leaves along with honey
  • oily skin with lemon juice
  • for normal skin you can use neem leaves along with multani mitti (fuller’s earth)
Neem decoction:

Add bunch of neem leaves to boiling water and hereafter heat them for 20 minutes more so that the extract of neem comes in water. Allow the decoction to cool down at room temperature and consume this water internally or externally for bath purposes to get great benefits for many skin diseases viz like acne, psoriasis, scabies and eczema.

Neem infused coconut oil:

You can also prepare the neem oil at home for the skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema. The dosage depends upon the severity being treated therefore consult an ayurvedic physician for proper dosage. To prepare neem oil take the dried neem leaves, add coconut oil to them, shake and place the jar under sunlight for 4-6 weeks. Thereafter by filtering this preparation you will get the infused neem oil.

Neem as health giver for hairs

Sometimes roughness of hairs, split ends, shedding of hairs, dandruff, telogen effluvium, head lice infection and itching became a cause of embarrassment in front of society. So how do we tackle with these problems…? For this neem is natural approach for you to get rid from all of these problems, in these situations you can use neem in different forms such as paste, oil or decoction.

  • Head louse: use the decoction of neem or neem oil
  • Greying of hairs: intake the neem oil through nose.
  • Lice and ticks: you can use seeds of the neem tree.
  • Itching: wash hairs with neem decoction.
  • Dandruff: use neem oil regularly to remove dandruff.
  • Hair growth: neem oil is a perfect remedy for hair growth.

Oral hygiene: Neem as Indian toothbrush

Traditionally people in India used to start their morning with the twig of neem tree as their toothbrush. They chew it and make it soft and then start rubbing their teeths with that crushed part of the twig as it has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antiulcer properties. Use of neem for oral care and for dental hygiene is from pat many centuries as it keeps you away from the mouth related ailments. You can also boil the neem leaves and gargle with them. If you want that your teeths become more stronger and plaque free, away from dental caries, bad breath, bleeding gums and pyorrhea, then make a habit of using neem for brushing your teeth. It kills all the germs present in your mouth, strengthen your gums as well as it makes your teeth white.

Want a perfect pesticide & bio fertilizer...

All over the world we are using pesticides as protectors of our crops i.e to keep pests, ticks, rats, mice and diseases carriers at bay. These pesticides are synthetic in nature hence responsible for changes in human genetics. They are carcinogenic, tumor promoters and the reason for various ailments among human race. By acting naturally and wise a better solution could be attained. All parts of neem like leaves, bark, seeds, flowers, fruit can be easily used as pesticides. The constituent azadirachtin which is found within the seeds of the neem tree is used as the most powerful international insecticide; it also acts on the larva as a larvicide, insect repellent due to its bitter properties. You can also utilize neem leaves directly into the field.

Neem as insecticide:

For neem as insecticide you have to select the neem fruits that are yellow in colour. Let the fruits to dry in the sunlight for 3 to 4 days till they turn brown and then remove seeds from the fruit. Thereafter impound these seeds into the mortar and pestle them till they are converted into powder. Mix this powder with the water and make solution thereafter allow it to rest for about 24 hours. Now this solution is ready to be used as an insecticide spray for crops.

As Neem is an insect repellent therefore the leaves of neem are hanged on the main entrance of the house to keep away the pests and diseases.

  • Leaves of neem are put across the newborn babies to protect them against infection and diseases.
  • The dried leaves of neem are placed in the cupboards and tins where grains are stored as it works as natural insecticides and prevent insects eating the clothes/grains etc.
  • Neem oil can also be applied over the pets which keeps away ticks and insects from their skin.

Neem for curing ailments

Neem is designated as the universal healer because of its multitude properties:

  • Antiviral: Inhibits the growth of viruses.
  • Antifungal: Inhibits the growth of fungi.
  • Antibacterial: Destroying the growth of bacteria.
  • Analgesic: Providing pain relief.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Reduce certain signs of inflammation, swelling or tenderness.
  • Antimicrobial: Destroying the growth of microorganisms.

Maladies: The diseases like measles, chicken pox, small pox, infectious diseases like swine flu, chikungunya neem in its various forms is highly useful. It is also useful in jaundice, intestinal worms, allergies, skin diseases, itching, kidney diseases, liver diseases, the diseases like anorexia, vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome, worms, acidity and its leaves & flowers are very useful for the eye disorders. Neem is also an immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti hyperglycaemic, antiulcer, antimalarial, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic.
